What I’m Gaming Vol. 5

Welcome back to What I’m Gaming! At the beginning of every week, I post about the games I’ve played in the past seven days and give some quick thoughts and impressions about those games. To see past editions of this feature, click What I’m Gaming.

This week I was really pressed for time so my gaming was compromised, but I was still able to enjoy a few solid hours of gaming this weekend.

Games I Played

Army of Two: The 40th Day

It’s been quite some time since I played this game. I think that in most ways, it’s an improvement over the original. I mean, you can sprint this time around!

All kidding aside, this game is firmly set in mediocrity. It can be a little frustrating with the sometimes poorly placed checkpoints and occasionally the enemies can be difficult to see (at least in co-op – I’ve only played the game split screen with the wifey). One interesting thing I didn’t know about this game was that you can play paper-rock-scissors with your co-op partner. It seems strangely familiar that Portal 2 has this feature in it, too. This game isn’t without its faults, but for the price you’d likely pay for it nowadays, it’s worth it.

NBA 2K11

I got a few multiplayer matches in with my bro, but I was able to spend most of my time in the game this week working on the My Player mode. In the game, I’m a 6’4”, 220 pound scoring point guard. I’ve distributed my skill points pretty evenly – I’m good in the post, excellent from mid-range and money from deep. Of course, I just swept the Rockets, Mavericks and Grizzlies, on my way to an NBA Finals against the 6th seeded Pistons. I won game one, and that’s where I left off. 3 games until I win my first NBA Championship!

Gyromancer

I only really spent a very short time playing this this week. I went back to one of the earlier stages to get the final award for it. I ended up unlocking the “Bearer of 30 Awards” achievement for my troubles.

Games I Bought

I made a new deal with myself – I will not buy any additional games until I complete (and by complete, I mean obtain all the achievements possible) in three games that I already own. One exception will be Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I’ve been waiting on that game for a while.

Other Gaming-Related News

I did something I normally don’t do: I downloaded a couple game demos. I got demos for Summer of Arcade game Bastion and upcoming retail release Catherine. I didn’t get to play the Bastion demo at all, but I started the Catherine demo, and it’s definitely looking like an intriguing game. When I have more time, I’ll go back and at least finish playing through the rest of the demo for it.

Adding to my list of things I normally don’t do, I also subscribed to Hulu Plus. I originally had no intentions of doing it, but one day last week, Netflix was down for a while and I got mad and got Hulu. It’s seems okay so far – got a few shows I like (most notably House) and a couple animes that Netflix doesn’t have, so I think it’s worth it. I’m still on my one week trial, so hopefully the commercials I’ve been seeing will go away when I’m actually paying for the service.

Conclusion

That about wraps up my gaming report for this week. Now it’s your turn – what have you been playing this past week? What new games have you bought?

Let me know in the comments.
