Rainbow Moon Review – Grind with Me

Rainbow Moon Exploration screenshot

When I was in high school, I used to sit and listen to the radio often. During that time period, circa 2004, an all male group called Pretty Ricky released a popular single called “Grind with me”. As it turns out, that title fits Rainbow Moon perfectly; you’ll be affectionately grinding out levels for quite some time.

The story begins with the main character, Baldren, mysteriously appearing through a portal on the appropriately-named Rainbow Moon. He doesn’t know how he got there, but is instantly blamed for bringing monsters to the previously peaceful land. Being a hero and all, he sets out to figure out how to get himself – and the monsters – back to their undisclosed home.

If you’re having a bit of an issue getting your head around the story, that’s because it barely exists. Rainbow Moon harkens back to a time where you’re basically given just enough of a reason as to why you’re doing something. Most of it is nonsensical, but trust me when I say that’s not why you want to play this game. But before we continue, please note:

This is not Final Fantasy Tactics or Disgaea.

Rainbow Moon does not have their depth, but there is enough to keep most people satisfied. Battles play out on a grid-based field and are entirely turn based. You’ll either use the D-Pad or left analog stick to move and choose who you’re attacking. It generally speeds up the battles, but be careful; if you mess up, you can’t take that move back. Naturally, as you get stronger, you’ll have more turns to use to vanquish your enemies. You’ll get a variety of spells and abilities, and new equipment (which are actually individually modeled) as the standards. At the end of battles, you’ll get “Rainbow Pearls.” These Pearls are awarded to the character landing the finishing blow and are used to upgrade individual stats, allowing the player to adapt their own play style.

Rainbow Moon screenshot

But character stats are not the only thing that can be customized – raw materials can be used to upgrade your weapons and armor by a Smith to give you even more options. And while we’re on the topic of “options”, Rainbow Moon includes a feature that other RPGs should copy: “random encounters” appear as a pop-up on the side of the screen, telling you exactly what monsters you would fight and how many there are if you choose to accept the battle. That’s right, random encounters are entirely optional, though there are enemies that actually appear on the map you may have to fight.

Oh, and did I mention there’s a world map? Because there is. The world map is huge, complete with optional areas and post-game play. This game is a long one, and when they said it takes about 40 hours to complete, they weren’t kidding. You’ll come across multiple towns and encampments where you can heal, shop and sleep and there are plenty of side quests to distract you.

And with such a big world, you’ll be pleased to know that it looks great. The colors are vibrant and the overall design is beautiful and fits the game well. The character designs are a bit bland and many of the enemies are just palette swaps of previous ones, but that’s what an old school styled game is about, right? Another system you’ll keep tabs on is the time and day. There are four days in Rainbow Moon’s week, lasting 18 hours and 32 minutes of simulated time. I say simulated because these are not actual minutes – the clock progresses a minute for each step you take. Shops are closed during certain times of day and enemies attack more often (through “random encounters” described above) and it greater numbers at night. We’re told early on that each day of the week has a special effect, but we have to discover it on our journey.

While you’re enjoying the gameplay and ogling the vivid locales, the soundtrack will completely immerse you. I’ve never been one to really praise the music in games, but from the main menu screen, I knew I was really going to enjoy the tunes of Rainbow Moon. Each area has its own theme and it transitions seamlessly as you walk around. My only complaint for the music is that the battle themes can get a bit stale since you’ll hear them so much. Also, outside of a brief cameo by the narrator, there is no voice acting. Rather, there are little sound bytes characters make when you speak to them; the Healer, in particular was my favorite.

Not everything is roses, though. You’ll learn very early on that your inventory is very limited so you’ll be juggling items left and right to make room for new stuff. Among the items you’ll be juggling are foods. Yeah, Rainbow Moon has a hunger system. Your hunger meter slowly decreases and when it hits zero, your characters are hungry and begin losing HP. It’s a pretty pointless system that has no real upside – I can’t tell you why it exists. Also, why is every dungeon so damn dark? To make you carry torches, that’s why! Just another thing for you to manage in your inventory. On one last note, the general volume in this game is very loud. My normal gaming volume on my TV is set to 35; in contrast, I play Rainbow Moon on 8 and there are no volume settings in-game.

Despite these small issues, I really had fun with Rainbow Moon and I’m glad to have played it. It’s not often a game goes back to the genre’s roots and gives you a nostalgic feel without the tinted goggles of time, and it deserves to be appreciated. With the Platinum Trophy and low cost of admission, Rainbow Moon is an enjoyable SRPG that should be taken more seriously than its name.

My Thoughts

I’ve been hearding a lot of people wanted this – Torchlight is finally on sale! Let’s see how many of them actually buy it, now. Personally, there’s not much for me here, aside from the Dante’s Inferno DLC. I don’t have the game, but it’s coming up soon on my Gamefly list. If you like racing, PSN has definitely got you covered this week. I am interested in the Power Stone Collection, though.

My Thoughts

It’s weeks like these that make me wish I wasn’t so impulsive sometimes. Out of the titles on sale on XBLA, I already have four of them. The other two I’m not all that interested in, so I’ll be passing on those this week. But I could’ve saved a lot of money if I’d waited to get them. Oh well, no use crying of spilled milk. There are a few solid titles on the PSN side, and if you have MAG, you’re definitely in for a good deal this week. However, this weeks main attraction is the beginning of the Uncharted 3 beta. If you’re a PSN+ subscriber (and most of us should be) then you have no reason to be passing on this. Enjoy!

Your Thoughts

Now you can let me know what you think about this weeks update. What games are you getting? Do you planning on getting any of the new games this week?

Let me know in the comments.

What I’m Gaming Vol. 1

There are a lot of people who report news and write articles, but either don’t play or barely play any games.

I’m not one of those people.

So, I’ve decided to write up a post that will become a new segment of passthemsticks. That way, you can know what I’m playing, what I’ve bought (and for how much), and other gaming-related news pertaining to me.

Games I Played

Tales of Vesperia

Tales of Vesperia

I am and always have been an avid JRPG fan, but lately, I haven’t devoted enough time to my favorite genre. I’ve played a lot of other games, but I felt I needed to sit down and enjoy a game that would take me back to my roots a bit. The last time I actually played a JRPG was Star Ocean: The Last Hope, and that was back in September 2010. I had started Tales of Vesperia previously, but I didn’t get very far. I decided to devote myself to it, this time.

It was a good decision. I think I’m about one-third through the storyline, and I must say I’m enjoying it. The narrative itself is pretty decent, but the battle system is very engaging. If you’re scared away from JRPGs because of turn-based battling, this game should open your eyes some. All the Tales games boast a unique (to the series) battle system that’s more wide open than other JRPGs out there, and has quite a bit of nuances to learn. It’s rare that I die during normal progress in an RPG, but I’ve died a few times in this game. And I love it.

This game also has Skits, which are meant to flesh out the characters and story, and they are effective and entertaining. And thankfully, fully voice-acted. Some previous Tales games didn’t have voice acting for Skits in the North American versions, but Vesperia does. I find myself hoping for another skit as soon as one of the cutscenes concludes. They really add to the experience.

Killzone 2

Killzone 2

I don’t own a PS3, but my girlfriend and her brothers do. I’ve had a PSN profile for a long time, but only recently have I been able to put it to use. I like FPS games, and I remember that I once enjoyed the original Killzone with a friend, so I thought I’d start it. I was also told (by a certain future brother-in-law) that I wouldn’t be able to obtain the platinum trophy on Killzone 2, so I’m motivated to do so.

I started this game several weeks ago, but I didn’t really start playing it until a few days ago. I’m really disappointed that you cannot manually map the controls in this game, because I found them to be awkward and nearly unplayable initially (R1 to shoot, really?), but I managed to find a more friendly control scheme (I believe it was Default 3) and continued my game on the second level.

Now that I can actually play the game, I can better enjoy it. Thus far, it seems to be a very solid shooter and a good addition to the PS3-exclusive games. The AI has been a bit basic and grenades don’t bounce as well as I believe they should, but the core gameplay is pretty good. There was even a brief vehicle segment in the earlier levels where I had to control a tank, and it actually controlled pretty well. For the record, many FPS games seem to struggle when it comes to vehicle controls (I’m looking at you, Call of Duty 2 and Battlefield Bad Company), but it handled about as well as a Scorpion tank in Halo 3.

The only real complaint is where it feels like they forced the Sixaxis controls on you. It’s okay that they wanted to use it to turn valves and place C4 charges, but why do I need to hold the controller completely still if I want to snipe? Well, at least I have been successful running around with my knife.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1

Played this one on PS3, since my future in-laws had it on their system and I hadn’t played it yet. I was curious to see how SEGA did in trying to get back the magic from the previous titles.

I’ll start by saying this: the game (so far) isn’t bad. However, it’s not quite the same. The level design feels right and the visuals are rock-solid, but the locales just feel rehashed from Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Another issue I had is the game doesn’t make me feel, well, fast. The point of playing a Sonic game is the feeling of speed while you’re zipping through the level. This Hedgehog just didn’t have the same zip to me. I do plan on finishing it, though. Right after I complete Killzone 2.

NBA 2K11

NBA 2K11

Not too much to say here. I play this just about every week with my brother online. We go back and forth in this game a lot and have a good time playing it. Best basketball game to date.

Halo: Reach

Halo: Reach

It’d been a little while, but I finally played a bit of the Halo: Reach multiplayer again. Had a few good matches, had a few bad ones. Thankfully, they put the jetpacks back into the ranked matches, so I can play them. I love the jetpack – it’s definitely the most fun to use for me. I simply don’t play as effectively when trying to use the other Armor Abilities. I’m a medium to close range fighter in that game and I need to cover ground quickly. The jetpack (and to a lesser extent, Sprint) allow me to do that.

It’s going to be weird playing the Halo: Anniversary Edition without the benefit of Armor Abilities, for sure.

Streets of Rage 2

Just playing through, beat the game in one short sitting. I was able to complete the online co-op, and I only have three achievements remaining. Unfortunately, they require me to play on Hardcore difficulty, and I’m not too good at this game…

F.E.A.R.

A friend on Xbox Live asked me to help him out with the multiplayer portion of this game, so I helped him boost it some. Still got plenty left to do, but we’re in no hurry. I was glad to help (even though I’ve already completed all the multiplayer achievements in this game) because he’s one of my oldest and best friends on Xbox Live, and he has helped me a lot in the past. It reminded me of all the time I spent playing this game online just for fun. It was a great game for its time.

The King of Fighters XII

I’ve been slowly but surely working towards completing the final achievement in this game, “The King of Fighters.” This achievement requires you to defeat every character WITH every character. There are 22 in all, and it basically forces you to create a chart or spreadsheet to keep up with it. Couple that with it being the WORST King of Fighters game ever (a true disgrace), and you can tell I’m eager to get this done and get rid of it.

Games I Bought

I’ve been trying to cut back on the games I purchase since I have a significant backlog of games, but sometimes, I see a deal so good I can’t pass it up. My most recent purchases were at Toys R Us, where they were running a Buy 2 for $50 sale. The choices were L.A. Noire, Portal 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Mortal Kombat, F.E.A.R. 3 and Brink. Not a bad selection, right?

Anyway, I own the first three already and I’m not interested in MK9, so I went with F.E.A.R. 3 and Brink. I also grabbed a new copy of Quantum of Solace while I was there for $10. So, I paid $60 plus tax for three new games – one that had released that day.

Other Gaming-related News

Nothing too important here, but I finally got around to moving all of my data off of my 20GB HDD and switched out to my 120GB HDD. This is a big step for me – I can finally install some games (like Bioshock) that I’ve been wanting to play again, and not have to constantly delete DLC and Arcade games to conserve space.

Conclusion

That about wraps up my gaming report for this week. Now it’s your turn – what have you been playing this past week? What new games have you bought?

Let me know in the comments.

My Thoughts

If you’re a PSN+ user, you should definitely be picking up Streets of Rage 2. It’s a good old school game, and it’s absolutely free. A few other solid games in there on sale for PlayStation Plus subscribers, like MicroBot – it was a pleasantly surprising game for me. Worth a buy, especially at only 5 bucks this week. It looks like there’s going to b a lot of dancing, singing and rockin’ out this week, with PSN discounting some Rock Band stuff and Xbox Live having a sale on all things Dance Central. I personally think that DLC for music games are painfully overpriced, and even with these sales, I still think they are.

Your Thoughts

Now you can let me know what you think about this weeks update. What games are you getting? Do you planning on getting any of the DLC this week?

My Thoughts

Looks to me like Sony’s trying to do a lot of catching up, and I don’t blame them. For anyone interested in any of the games, this would be a great week to either pick up the games or DLC. Definitely a fantastic series of games. If you haven’t played them, I suggest you take this opportunity before it’s too late. If you like Warhawk, its got a steep discount this week, shaving off 20 bucks. Another good grab if you’re into that game.

Both sides have a lot of old Call of Duty map packs from previous games. Nothing to write home about, but if you own and enjoy the multiplayer in those games, it’s something you could look at. I won’t be getting them – I own the games but don’t play them online all that much. No new releases this week for 360. Are they waiting for the Summer of Arcade games? Who knows. But they’ve been letting us down the past few weeks.

Your Thoughts

What games or DLC are you considering buying this week? Is there anything you’re on the fence about?

Let me know in the comments!

Playstation Store is back!

ps3

Well, it was previously thought to be set for tomorrow, June 3rd, but Sony pulled a fast one on us and got it up early this morning. They’re saying that there will be another update tomorrow and the Customer Appreciation package is not available yet (they said they’re doing additional testing on that), but there is a lot of backed-up content that is now available for downloading.

But don’t take my word for it. Let’s hear it from them…

Playstation Network

Same old, same old. The Playstation Store is still down and Sony missed their self-imposed deadline of May 31st, but not by much. If everything goes according to plan, Sony says the Playstation Store should return on Friday, June 3, 2011. So the wait is almost over, then everyone can enjoy their selection of free games in Sony’s Customer Appreciation program. Oh, and since you’ll all be Playstation Plus subscribers, why not check out the Uncharted 3 beta at the end of the month?

Stay tuned.

My Thoughts

Still no PSN (for the moment) and nothing but Rock Band DLC on sale this week. Man, it’s starting to feel like Microsoft is either taking a break while PSN is gone or biding its time until it’s time for the Summer of Arcade games to come out. This is the weakest selection yet. Not even a new release available at this time.

I’m sure the routine is getting a bit old by now, but the Playstation Store is still down. I guess the rumor it would return on May 24 was wrong. Kinda like the prediction for Rapture and the End of the World being on May 21. Anyway, it appears it was just some scheduled maintenance for PSN.

My Thoughts

Unless you love Besthesda games and have yet to pick up the DLCs, it’s a pretty weak week on Xbox Live. If there’s a Game of the Year version for either of those games, I’d probably pick that up instead of trying to buy each of these separately. There weren’t even any new Arcade games or DLC out this week. And of course, no PSN to compete. Maybe next week will be better. I hope so.

EDIT: Major Nelson posted an update stating the release of one game this week – Dungeons & Dragons Daggerdale. So there is ONE new arcade game released this week, afterall.
